The Benefits of Eating Seafood

on June 4, 2012

Sure we all love seafood, but are you aware of the many health benefits of incorporating seafood into your family’s diet?  Most experts suggest making sure that adults and children consume seafood at least twice a week to fully receive the health benefits of it.

It is important to incorporate a variety of seafood into your diet to maximize the amount of omega-3’s that you will receive.  Excellent sources of fish are salmon, trout, sardines, and tuna.  Seafood is an excellent source of high-quality protein which helps you stay full longer and is essential to muscle and bone development in your little ones.

Seafood also contains an abundance of Vitamin D which is associated with its anti-cancer and bone building properties as well.  While our bodies can produce a certain amount of Vitamin D through sunlight, it is essential to get this vitamin through good food choices as well.

The Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids that are abundant in seafood are linked to lowering cholesterol, decreasing blood clotting issues, and helping to maintain healthy blood vessels.  In addition to this, seafood helps to boost the immune system, fight infections, and infant brain development.

When selecting seafood, it is important to select organic as much as possible since the mercury content is lower.  This is the biggest concern among most consumers since Mercury exposure can occur easily if a large about of seafood, especially fish is consumed.  This is one reason why many experts advise that we should limit the amount of seafood consumed each week.
